The trail has been a long discussed goal of the Community Club. According to a recent survey conducted by the Community Club, the majority of Wausa community members have a desire for a walking/biking trail. Thanks to several motivated Wausa Community members, that goal is finally starting to be realized, but they can’t do it alone.
One of the key benefits of the trail is to optimize the safety of pedestrians as well as an additional avenue to drive people to utilize the great park Wausa has to offer. A committee, consisting of people from the organizations in town has formed to get the project underway. The members include Doug Johnson, Allison Cunningham, Dawn Friedrich, Cheryl Marks, Darren Vanness, Nichole Carlson, Carlie Johnston, and Leanna Munter.
The plan for the non-motorized path is mapped out and will proceed through the park and around the pool reaching a distance of .84 mile. The cost will be determined after we receive bids from engineers and concrete contractors. The committee is applying for a grant through the Nebraska Game and Parks. It is an 80/20 reimbursement grant, which means Wausa will pay it all up front and then get 80% of it reimbursed. The maximum to receive is $250,000.
The committee needs to raise 20% of the cost, so they are asking for pledged donations from the community if and when they receive the grant. If you would be willing to give to this exciting initiative, you can contact Leanna at leannamunter@gmail.com.
Here is a brief message from the committee: “We appreciate your support and monetary donations. We feel that this trail will be a great addition to the Wausa park and are very hopeful to receive the grant so we can get started.”
