The town of Wausa’s plans for a public walking trail are halted due to mid-July storm damage. Two shelters located in the park suffered substantial damage, along with a destroyed camper and many uprooted trees.
Following the clean up process, the concrete trail will spread eight feet wide and stretch approximately 4,484 feet in length, looping through the park and around the city pool’s block. According to committee member Leanna Munter, the project’s engineer will finish his design and perform a series of environmental studies, including a Hazardous Material Review. With final approval will begin the town soliciting bids for construction.
Funding comes from a reimbursement grant from the Recreational Trails Program through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the Federal Highway Administration. The grant provides funding through an 80/20 model; the government will provide 80% of the cost and the local funding will cover 20%. Wausa was granted the maximum of $250,000. About $69,000 from local donors along with an additional $40,000 in separate grant money attribute to the current fund.
According to Munter, the lengthy application process began with a project description, photographs of the potential trail, and over 20 letters of support from various community members and businesses. “We had a narrative written up by our committee members, we came up with a maintenance plan, and we uploaded the deed records and plat maps. We also had to get a project resolution, and we got an itemized cost estimate which the engineer was able to provide,” she said. The committee will meet with the project engineer in the coming weeks to evaluate the next steps.
